For those who want to understand · after Day 15

Why exactly these qualities are the foundation

No list of “the main qualities” exists — the source of the method itself says so: the qualities “cannot be counted”, and to name them all “would mean to limit”. So our model is not a list from a book but a construction by three verifiable rules. The twelve cards of the course stand on ten axes of the Wheel: seven roots, three qualities with an axis of their own, two cards inside neighbouring axes, the rim and the centre. What these words mean comes right below, then the whole logic and how to refute it.

This page names the qualities and quotes fragments of the source without references. If you are on your first round of the 30 days, this is a spoiler: the names open on Day 15.

The words first

The Wheel in three words

fact rim axis

Axes — ten qualities

Each axis is one quality with a score from 0 to 5, and the score is given only by a fact from the last 14 days. Ten axes, because ten qualities leave different traces in the diary; if two qualities leave the same trace, the instrument counts one weakness twice.

The rim — what is kept every day

The rim is the outer ring of a wheel, the one it rolls on. For us it is two daily habits: the minute before the painting in the morning and the line of contribution in the evening. They are not scored but counted in days: how many of the fourteen you kept. That is where solemnity and gratitude live.

The centre — honesty

The centre (the hub, on a real wheel) holds all the axes. For us it is the rule “no fact — no score” and thirty evening entries by the rule “a fact, not a feeling”. Honesty cannot be measured as an axis, because it is the instrument itself.

Method

Three criteria of a foundation

A quality becomes an axis of the Wheel only when all three conditions hold. The first answers “by what right”, the second “can it be measured”, the third “does it have territory of its own”.

1. The source itself calls it a foundation

The source directly calls the quality the “foundation”, the “synthesis” or the “cement” of the others — or derives other qualities from it with a verb: “from this is born…”, “the second flows from the first”. Not our opinion, but a formula of the text itself.

2. There is a deed distinguishable in the diary

The quality has a deed of the day that an outside witness would have seen and that does not coincide, by construction, with the deed of another axis. If two “qualities” leave the same trace in the evening entry, the instrument measures the same thing twice.

3. It has an antipode of its own

The source names the enemy that this very quality defeats: fear for courage, despondency for joy, selfhood for selflessness, condemnation for love. The pair “quality — antipode” is the axis: it has two ends and a middle.

The model was assembled in several independent passes that then “attacked” one another: the source's own lists of basic qualities; the graph of derivation (“what is born from what”); the pairs of antipodes; the letters that accompany the source; an external encyclopaedia of spiritual qualities; and the demands of the instrument — a Wheel that must not have sectors repeating one another. Three independent final reviews named the same set of axes.

The core

Seven roots

Seven qualities the source itself calls the foundation, the synthesis or the cement of the others — and they reduce to nothing but one another. The top of the model is cyclic: love is called “the synthesis of all qualities”, equilibrium “the synthesis of all the other qualities”, and “in love are contained devotion, and striving, and selflessness”. This is not a flaw of the model but a property of the source: being basic is decided not by one quotation but by balance — where the formulas come from, where they go, and whether there is an axis of one's own.

RootRoleFormula of the sourceAntipodeDeed of the day
Love and heartfulness“the foundation” — the first of three rods“the synthesis of all qualities”; “all other qualities are only facets of its many-sidedness”condemnation: “where condemnation could arise, love was incomplete”in one contact address a person by name and ask about the person, not the task
Striving“the means” — the second rod“the key to all caves”; qualities “can be formed only by persistent striving”; “always a flight into the future”habit, indifferencein the morning name one step towards the future that is not on the to-do list — and take it before evening
Equilibrium“the goal” — the third rod“the synthesis of all the other qualities”; “the crown of the spirit”; calm, restraint, self-control are “only facets” of ita blow from outside: “equilibrium — from outside influence”a pause of three breaths before answering; irritation not passed on
Devotion and faithfulnessthe cement of direction“cements all the qualities of the spirit”; all the fiery qualities of service “are founded on devotion”treachery, doubt, betrayalone decision of the day by a given word against convenience or gain — written down
Constancy and patiencethe cement in time; rhythm is the method, patience the second half of the axis“the foundation on which the flowers of all the other qualities are embroidered”; “without it all the other qualities lose their value”wavering; for patience — irritation and impatiencethe same small action at the appointed hour, never missed twice; wait for the term without pushing
Co-measurementthe measurethe only quality from which the source derives others with a verb: “the second flows entirely from the first”; “from it is born the discernment of people”“one who does not distinguish the small from the great”one main thing for the day named and protected from trifles; one written refusal of the unnecessary
Selflessnessa root with a reservationby the letter “only a facet of love” — yet the parent of courage and heroism: “the fire of courage is only a part of the flame of self-sacrifice”; “what love is there without self-denial”selfhood: “selfhood is the betrayal of selflessness”one thing done for another that cost something named — an hour, a gain, a comfort; the cost written down, no telling

The reservation on selflessness is honest: two reviews out of three count it a root (its own antipode, its own “give at a cost”, courage derived from it), one — the first derivative of love. It does not affect the Wheel: the axis exists either way. Love can be free of charge; selflessness is the moment when love pays.

Derived from the roots, yet holding ground of their own

Three qualities with an axis of their own

For three qualities the source derives their origin — and still keeps them as separate pairs with an antipode of their own: “cheerfulness is the antipode of despondency, and courage of fear. Thus all the pairs of opposite qualities can be reviewed.” Seven roots are blind to three profiles — “calm but cowardly”, “even but narrow”, “disciplined but whining”. That is why there are ten axes, not seven.

Courage and fearlessness

Derived: “only one aspect of calm”, “only a part” of self-sacrifice. Its own axis: “courage frees from fear” — while equilibrium frees “from outside influence”; two different axes. “A coward cannot arm himself with calm.” Antipode: fear. Deed: a step postponed out of fear is taken — a message, a call, admitting a mistake out loud.

Containment

Derived: the lineage “trust → patience → tolerance → containment → admission → daring”; “patience is the parent of tolerance”. Its own axis: the pair to co-measurement — that one narrows, this one widens; “containment is the understanding of motives”, with a ban on giving up one's long-considered convictions. Antipode: denial, narrowness. Deed: retell the position of someone who disagrees so that they confirm “yes, exactly so”.

Joy

Derived: “the consequence of right action”, “one of the aspects of harmony”. Its own axis: tone — “joy is equal in power to love”, “strength flows from joy”; the fruit and at the same time the indicator of the whole system. Antipode: despondency — “the enemy of every perfecting”. Deed: not one complaint aloud in a day with a written-down trouble; one encouragement to another for a deed.

Twelve cards, ten axes

Two cards inside neighbouring axes, the rim and the centre

The course is a training device: it may have separate days within one axis. The Wheel is an instrument: it must not have sectors that repeat one another. So there are twelve cards and ten axes, and the numbers need not coincide.

Gratitude — counted together with love

Card no. 6, Days 3 and 22. The source resolves it into other qualities: “one of the main qualities of justice”, “the setting of justice”, and justice “flows entirely” from co-measurement. There is no formula “from gratitude is born X” in the source. The deed “thank you for a specific deed” is the same speech act of attention to a person as on the axis of love; so in the course it remains as days, and on the Wheel it is counted together with the axis of love.

Patience — counted together with constancy

Card no. 3, Days 13 and 18. Derived: “courage, patience and equilibrium are facets of one diamond”; with constancy the source puts it into a single quality. But the deed “wait for the term without forcing” is real and was absent from the course before — hence a card, but not a separate axis. A disputed point: two reviews out of three put patience on the axis of time, one next to containment. The data of the cohorts will decide.

Solemnity — the rim

It used to be a separate axis. The source calls it “the apotheosis of equilibrium” and a “synthetic” quality: “there can be no solemnity without fire… without the striving of the spirit”. In the diary it has no trace of its own: “ten minutes whole” is holding the axis of time, “the line of what it is for” is the morning line of Day 1. It is not thrown out but moved into a daily mechanism that the course trains thirty times rather than twice: the minute before the painting and the line “what it is for” before the main task — literally the source's advice to make solemnity “the ordinance of every day's life”. The Wheel checks it with the question “on how many days out of 14 did you keep the minute”.

Honesty — the centre

“The honesty of admission… every spirit must develop in itself” — but the axis “truth / self-deception” is not observable from outside within a day: an axis of honesty would measure the instrument itself. So honesty is the centre on which all the axes hold: thirty evening entries by the rule “a fact, not a feeling”, and the Wheel's rule “no fact — no score”. Admitting a mistake out loud is a step of courage (Day 24). If the entries of the first cohort show a systematic “feeling instead of fact”, a condition-day of honesty is the first replacement on Day 22.

Why ten, not seven and not twelve

Not seven

Seven roots do not distinguish a calm person from a cowardly one, an even one from a narrow one, a disciplined one from a despondent one. The source keeps courage, containment and joy as independent pairs with their own antipode, and each has a deed that in the diary coincides with no root.

Not twelve

Solemnity and gratitude have no trace of their own in the diary — this is visible by construction, without cohort data: their deeds coincide with the deeds of neighbouring axes. A sector that repeats another does not add precision to the instrument but breaks it: the same weakness is counted twice.

What did not become an axis — and where it went

Each of these qualities is real. None is thrown out — each has its place in the mechanics of the course; it is simply not a separate axis.

  • Honesty, sincerity, purity of motive — “the first condition” of service, but not a single formula “the synthesis of other qualities”; “sincerity, in other words heartfulness”. The centre of the wheel: the evening entry by fact.
  • Labour and the quality of work — “labour is fiery action”: the field where qualities are forged, not one of them. The format “a day counts only by a completed deed” already carries it.
  • The sense of the Beautiful — a criterion and a method, not a trait of character: “in upbringing the first place belongs to the perception of beauty”. That is the rim: the paintings every morning.
  • Benevolence — a form of love: “love and benevolence exclude condemnation”. The deed of Day 19, not an axis.
  • Humility, compassion, discipline — derivable: humility is co-measurement + containment; compassion is love + selflessness; discipline is constancy + devotion. The inclusion map is on the qualities page.
  • Responsibility, purity, trust — the line “my consequence” in the evening entry; the measure of every quality; the entrance to patience (“where does the source of patience flow from? — from the ore of trust”).

Twelve counterweights

Every quality has a distortion — what it turns into if it grows without its neighbour. The counterweight is the other half of the pair or the nearest axis. This is the reason the qualities are trained as a ring, not one favourite at a time.

QualityWithout its counterweightDistortion
Strivingwithout co-measurementA fanatical lunge, contempt for ordinary life
Devotion and faithfulnesswithout containmentBlind worship, dependence on a figure
Patiencewithout strivingEndurance, non-resistance; patience shorter than the wish
Love and heartfulnesswithout equilibriumSentimentality, rescuing
Selflessnesswithout co-measurementThe pose of a victim, burnout disguised as service
Gratitudewithout honestyFlattery, routine politeness
Equilibriumwithout courageTightness, the appearance of calm while boiling
Courage and fearlessnesswithout co-measurementAggression, a heroic pose, risk for effect
Constancy and rhythmwithout joyMechanical obligation, pressure on yourself
Containmentwithout devotionVagueness and omnivorousness disguised as breadth
Co-measurementwithout courageCaution to the point of cowardice, an eternal “not the time”
Joywithout honestyStrained positivity, denial of pain

How to refute it

The model is open to refutation, and we have named in advance what will change it. The first cohorts will give data — evening entries by fact and the sectors of the Wheel — and this is what we will look at.

  1. Patience: what the score of Days 13 and 18 correlates with — the axis of time or containment. The second moves patience to another axis.
  2. Selflessness: if its sector repeats the sector of heartfulness for most participants, it becomes part of the axis of love, and the axes become nine.
  3. Gratitude: whether participants distinguish Days 3 and 22 from Day 6 by the trace in the diary. If they do so consistently, it has an axis of its own, and we will bring it back.
  4. The 14-day window: if the share of empty sectors of the Wheel is above a quarter — a 21-day window.
  5. Day 18: if “know the term” leaves no trace distinguishable from Day 13, its place is taken by “do it beautifully and to the end”.
  6. A new quality: name a quality that cannot be derived from the ten axes by the inclusion map and has its own deed of the day and its own antipode. This is the most direct way to break the model — and we will publish it.

An honest limitation: the formulas “the synthesis of all qualities” prevail in the later records that accompany the source; by the early books alone, explicit formulas “of all / of the others” remain with devotion, constancy, striving and co-measurement, while love and equilibrium rest on the letters and the later records. This does not affect the set of axes — it does affect the strictness of the wording.
