Humaneness

Noticing who is having a hard time and doing something — without advice and without cruelty to the one who is inconvenient

Nicholas Roerich. Compassion, 1936

Where this comes out in ordinary life

Family, team, neighbours — everything that rests on people. A noticed heaviness and one deed → the person beside you is not alone → they stay, they come back and do the same for others; with an inconvenient person, without cruelty → a conflict does not turn into a war. What costs dearly is not the help but going unnoticed.

The sign that it has grown: people come to you with their trouble before they come with a request.

Where it is trained

The quality the source puts first of all: “the gate to all other worlds” and at the same time “an armour”. Trained in the ability to notice who beside you is having a hard time and to do one concrete thing — without advice and without cruelty to the one who is inconvenient.

The deep level

The deed of Day 10 is, at depth, humaneness. Not softness and not pity: what the source in one paragraph calls both the gate and the armour. It is tested not on pleasant people — on inconvenient ones: on the one who is wrong, who irritates, who let you down.

The check question of the day: Who was having a hard time beside me today — and what did I do?

In the 30 Days course — Day 10 (experience) and Day 25 (the name and depth).

Ways to train it

The methods are tested in practice and chosen for this quality. Take two or three, no more: a narrow focus builds the muscle faster than a long list.

Humaneness as armour, not as softness. Notice one person who is having a hard day and do one concrete thing for them — without asking “how can I help” and without giving advice.
Help by deed, not by advice. Proven: a concrete offer (“I’ll bring dinner at seven”) is accepted many times more often than “call me if you need anything”. Unasked advice is a way of staying at a distance; a deed is a way of standing beside.
The cruelty check: one question at the end of the day — with whom was I harder today than the matter required?. Inhumanity rarely looks like villainy: more often it looks like “it’s your own fault” and a jab at the one who let you down.
The trap. Pity and rescuing, which humiliate; and “humaneness” only towards the pleasant. It is tested on the inconvenient: on the one who is wrong, who irritates, who let you down.
The minimum for a hard day. Notice one person who is having a hard time and do one concrete thing — without advice.
How to score yourself on the Wheel (0 / 1 / 3 / 5). 0 — I do not notice who beside me is having a hard time, or I notice and walk on; 1 — helped when I was asked and when it was convenient; 3 — noticed it myself and did a concrete thing without advice, including for a person I find inconvenient, written down the same day; 5 — people say that beside me one is allowed to be weak (their words).

How it works in ordinary life

Family, team, neighbours — everything that rests on people.

Mechanism: a noticed heaviness and one deed → the person beside you is not alone → they stay, they come back and do the same for others; with an inconvenient person, without cruelty → a conflict does not turn into a war. What costs dearly is not the help but going unnoticed.

Sign: people come to you with their trouble before they come with a request.

Boundary: help given unasked where people ask to be left alone is an intrusion; rescuing grows helplessness.
