Library: the essence of the Teaching and the books

Since 1 January 2026 the books of Living Ethics and the letters of Helena Roerich are in the public domain. Anyone may read, publish, translate and comment on the sources. Here is a map: what to read, in what order, and how to check any quotation in a minute.

Read the sources on agniyoga.org →

The Teaching's two self-names set two axes: “Agni Yoga” — the vertical of connection through Fire (Infinity → heart → deed), “Living Ethics” — the horizontal of ethics in the life of the day. At the centre of the crossing is the heart. On the left, Help descends; on the right, striving ascends: “The heavenly is realised only through the earthly.”

The heart — the centre of the map

The organ of synthesis and the bridge between the worlds: not an emotion but an instrument of cognition and connection, to which a separate book of the Teaching is devoted (1932). Through the heart the vertical of Fire meets the horizontal of life.

“The prayer of the heart is the expression of love and devotion”Hierarchy, §60; the book “Heart” (1932) — a running theme

The Hierarchy of Light

The connection between the worlds is held not by power but by law — like gravity, not like an order. Hierarchy is a chain of help from the Highest to the one walking, which one enters voluntarily.

“Hierarchy is not coercion, it is the law of the Universe”Hierarchy, Introduction (before §1)

Fire — the all-originating energy

One energy permeates all that exists; in a person it is manifested as psychic energy. Its accumulator and conductor is striving.

“Truly, striving and psychic energy are, one may say, synonyms”Letter of Helena Roerich, 2.10.1936

Cosmic laws and evolution

The world is lawful, not arbitrary: cause gives birth to effect (karma), everything moves towards greater complexity and refinement (evolution), like answers to like (correspondence). Free will acts within the laws.

A running theme of the books “Infinity” and “Fiery World” and of the letters of Helena Roericha corpus-wide theme (no single §)

Individuality and personality

The immortal Individuality accumulates experience through a succession of mortal personalities — working instruments for one life. The thread connecting them is the Antahkarana.

The exact distinction is given in the letter on the structure of manLetter of Helena Roerich, 11.06.1935

The Chalice — the vessel of accumulations

Only what is truly earned is laid into the Chalice: qualities, experience, crystals of psychic energy. Everything else burns away with the change of personality.

“The qualities of the spirit are those very elements of immortality so needed to fill the Chalice”Facets of Agni Yoga, 1961, §492; letter of Helena Roerich, 11.06.1935; Facets, 1957, §321

Thought is energy

Thought is not “inner noise” but a real force that creates effects in the three worlds. Hence the first discipline of the path — the watch over one's motives.

“He who wishes to approach the Fire must watch all his motives”Fiery World I, §364

Qualities of the spirit

The unit of spiritual growth is not knowledge and not an experience, but a quality that has entered behaviour: striving, devotion, equilibrium, courage and others. They are the contents of the Chalice.

“The affirmation of the qualities of the spirit is the process of consciously forming the fiery body”Facets of Agni Yoga, 1962; 1961, §492

Life is a laboratory

The Teaching is tested not by agreement but by experiment in one's own day. No amount of reading replaces a deed.

“The quality of one's attainments is revealed in life”Agni Yoga, §38; cf. the Preface: “First we shall apply the counsels of life”

Labour

Labour is not a curse and not merely a means of earning, but the proving-ground of quality and prayer in action. Mastery given to the common cause is the seed of community.

“Every workshop can be an embryo of a community… to offer skills to the common work”New Era Community (Riga), §3

Community and cooperation

Evolution is accomplished not by loners and not by the crowd, but by the cooperation of the free. Mutual help is not charity but a way of existing.

“Community-cooperation is the single sensible way for human beings to live together”; “The path of life is one of mutual help”New Era Community (Riga), §200; §5

Culture and Beauty

Culture is reverence for Light: the protection and creation of values above everyday life. Beauty is not decoration but a working force of the path that tunes consciousness.

A running theme of the Teaching and of the whole work of the Roerichs (the Pact for the protection of culture, 1935)a corpus-wide theme (no single §)

Joy and equilibrium

Joy is not a mood but a wisdom and a strength won through difficulty. Equilibrium is an unshakeable centre that is held by motion, like a spinning top.

“Joy is a special wisdom”; “like a spinning top, the rhythm of motion should be kept”New Era Community, §163; Hierarchy, §54; Fiery World III, §230

Why the map is built this way

Support 1 — the two self-names. The Teaching named itself twice: “Agni Yoga” (connection through Fire — the vertical: Infinity, Hierarchy, energy, heart) and “Living Ethics” (ethics applied in life — the horizontal: thought, labour, community, the Common Good). A map that took only one axis would distort the Teaching: without the vertical it turns into a moral code, without the horizontal into abstract esotericism. The crossing of the axes is the heart: the “organ of synthesis”, to which a separate book is devoted (1932), standing in the middle of the series.

Support 2 — the sequence of the books themselves. The order of 1924–1937 is not accidental: The Call (the vertical opens) → Illumination (foundations) → Community (the horizontal of life) → Agni Yoga (the method) → Infinity and Hierarchy (the universe) → Heart (the centre) → Fiery World (the three worlds and transmutation) → AUM and Brotherhood (the energy of connection and the goal). The five levels of the map are the straightened spiral of the corpus, not an external classification.

Support 3 — five marker formulas from different corpora. Each level is anchored by a verbatim quotation: the Universe — “Hierarchy is not coercion, it is the law of the Universe” (Hierarchy, Introduction); the Human Being — “the qualities of the spirit are those very elements of immortality” (Facets, 1961, §492) and the letter of 11.06.1935 on the Chalice; the Path — “The quality of one's attainments is revealed in life” (Agni Yoga, §38); the Method — “Application is the shortest path of attainment. We know no other path” (Facets, 1962) and “First we shall apply the counsels of life” (Preface to Agni Yoga); the Goal — “inseparable from self-improvement” (Agni Yoga, §36) and “The heavenly is realised only through the earthly” (Facets, 1963). The five levels are cross-confirmed by all three main corpora — the structure grows out of the text rather than being laid over it.

What the map deliberately leaves out — and why. No occult phenomenology (astral excursions, visions, “opening the centres” by exercises): Helena Roerich's letters insistently warn against chasing phenomena and against mechanical practices without a Teacher — phenomena are called a dangerous side path. No dates and prophecies: the Teaching stresses that terms are movable and that deriving them is harmful. No “guru-lord” figure and no ritualism: “We must neither invite nor impose — that is the basic rule” (letter to L. A. Johansson, 17.08.1934). The map of the essence is what remains when everything the sources themselves warn against has been removed.

The method of verification. All references follow the Riga–Paris line of first editions, 1924–1937 (the text is reproduced at agniyoga.org: a one-minute check); letters — by date and addressee; “Facets” — year + record number (until 2042 — paraphrase, not quotation). Nodes without an established paragraph are honestly marked as a “running theme” — there are four of them out of thirteen, and none is load-bearing.

In sum. The essence of Agni Yoga on one map: a lawful, living, hierarchical Cosmos of Fire; the human being as a bridge between the worlds with an immortal Chalice of accumulations; the path — the forging of the qualities of the spirit in ordinary life; the method — daily application in freedom, without coercion; the goal — endless perfectment, in which the heavenly is realised only through the earthly.

Each level is anchored by a marker formula from the source, and each follows logically from the previous one — these are not headings but a chain of inference.

Level I

THE UNIVERSE — a lawful Cosmos of Fire

“Hierarchy is not coercion, it is the law of the Universe” — Hierarchy, Introduction
  • Infinity: the world is boundless in space and in spirit (“Is it worthwhile to speak of Infinity if it is unattainable?” — Infinity, part 1, §1)
  • Three worlds: the Dense, the Subtle, the Fiery — layers of one continuous reality (the “Fiery World” cycle)
  • Fire / psychic energy — one all-originating energy in everything (letter of 2.10.1936)
  • Laws: evolution, causality (karma), correspondence — freedom acts within the law

If the world is a lawful evolution of energy, then a human being in it is neither a spectator nor a victim, but a knot of that energy and a potential co-worker. Hence level II.

Level II

THE HUMAN BEING — a bridge between the worlds

“The qualities of the spirit are those very elements of immortality so needed to fill the Chalice” — Facets, 1961, §492
  • The immortal Individuality and the mortal personality-instrument; the thread of the Antahkarana (letter of 11.06.1935)
  • The Chalice — the vessel of imperishable accumulations (letter of 11.06.1935; Facets 1957, §321)
  • The heart — the organ of synthesis and connection (the book “Heart”; Hierarchy §60)
  • Thought is energy: the watch over motives (Fiery World I, §364)

If only what is accumulated in the Chalice is immortal, then the main work of a life is the forging of qualities. And they can be forged only where the material resists — in life. Hence level III.

Level III

THE PATH — ethics in the thick of life

“The quality of one's attainments is revealed in life” — Agni Yoga, §38
  • Life as a laboratory: testing by experience, not by belief (“First we shall apply the counsels of life” — Preface to Agni Yoga)
  • Labour as the proving-ground of quality (New Era Community, §3)
  • Community and cooperation (New Era Community, §200; §5)
  • Culture and Beauty as the protection and tuning of consciousness
  • Joy — “a special wisdom” (New Era Community, §163)

A path in the thick of life needs a method that does not tear one out of life — otherwise the path would become an escape. Hence level IV.

Level IV

THE METHOD — application in freedom

“Application is the shortest path of attainment. We know no other path” — Facets, 1962
  • Daily application instead of asceticism and rites
  • Rhythm and constancy — “Constancy is also a quality of Fire” (Fiery World I, §53)
  • Striving — “the key to every cave” (New Era Community, §55)
  • Standing before the Teacher and the Hierarchy — connection, not submission (Hierarchy, Introduction; §54 — “like a spinning top”)
  • Freedom: “We must neither invite nor impose — that is the basic rule” (letter of 17.08.1934)

The method of daily application opens a goal that has no ceiling. Hence level V.

Level V

THE GOAL — endless perfectment

“Each step of life must be considered as inseparable from self-improvement” — Agni Yoga, §36 · “The heavenly is realised only through the earthly” — Facets, 1963
  • Fiery transmutation: the conscious forming of the fiery body (Facets, 1962)
  • Immortality of consciousness — continuity through a filled Chalice
  • Service to evolution and to the Common Good — personal perfectment is never a private possession
  • Brotherhood — a community of the highest order as the summit of the series of books (1937)

The circle closes: the goal is realised only through the earthly — and returns the one walking to the life of the day, to level III, but with a new quality. A spiral, not a ladder.

The very sequence of the books is a spiral from “The Call” to “Brotherhood”: the call of the Highest → foundations → the social dimension → the method of life → cosmology → the law of connection → the organ of the path → the three worlds → the energy of connection → the goal.

1Leaves of Morya's Garden. The Call · Paris, 1924 · records of 1920–1924

Role in the series. The door of the series: the vertical opens. Not a treatise but a direct call from the Teacher to the disciple — a language close to the psalms. The book sets the tone of the whole Teaching: joy, achievement, striving towards the New Era.

The core of the book:

  • The call of the Highest and the human answer — the beginning of the path
  • Joy and daring as the first conditions
  • Achievement in life, not in seclusion
  • The New Era and the message addressed to Russia
  • Purity of striving matters more than knowledge

The records of “The Call” are dated by day (1920–1924), not numbered by paragraph — references to “The Call” in the kit are given by date. Verbatim marker formulas are deliberately not given here: the kit has no iron verification of individual lines against the Riga edition; the book is taken as a whole, as a tuning fork of tone.

diaries “The Call” is assembled from Helena Roerich's earliest diary records (from 24.03.1920) — it is the book of the series closest to the source.

letters Helena Roerich's letters often advised beginning the reading precisely with “The Call” — with the heart, not with analysis.

How to read. Read as poetry, aloud, in small portions. Do not take notes — tune in. If the language of “The Call” seems difficult, Helena Roerich's letters allowed beginning with “Agni Yoga” or “Community” and returning to “The Call” later.

2Leaves of Morya's Garden. Illumination · Paris, 1925

Role in the series. The foundations of the path: after the call — the structure. The Stronghold and the Brotherhood, discipleship, the signs of the new consciousness and the rules of action are introduced. Structure — parts, chapters, paragraphs.

The core of the book:

  • The Stronghold of the Brotherhood — the source of the Teaching
  • Discipleship: the bearing of the one who walks
  • The “four stones of the foundation” of actions
  • Cooperation and new construction
  • Responsibility for thought
“Place four stones in the foundation of your actions: First — Reverence for the Hierarchy. Second — Consciousness of unity. Third — Consciousness of co-measurement. Fourth — Application of the principle, ‘By your God’”Illumination, part 2, ch. IX, §9 — verified

Facets “Facets” constantly return to the “four stones” as a practical formula for the day.

letters The letters explain the principle “By your God” as the art of speaking to a person in the language of their consciousness.

How to read. The first “structural” book of the series: suitable as an entrance for the rational reader. References — part.chapter.paragraph.

3New Era Community · Riga, 1936 · first ed. — Urga, 1926 (different numbering)

Role in the series. The horizontal of life: the Teaching turns towards society. Labour, cooperation, mutual help — community is built not by force but by the quality of cooperation. The most “social” book of the series.

The core of the book:

  • Mutual help as the path of life
  • Labour and mastery given to the common cause
  • Cooperation instead of coercion
  • Co-measurement — the measure of spiritual maturity
  • Joy as a working force
“The path of life is one of mutual help” (§5) · “Every workshop can be an embryo of a community… to offer skills to the common work” (§3) · “Community-cooperation is the single sensible way for human beings to live together” (§200) · “Joy is a special wisdom” (§163) · “Striving is the boat of an Arhat… Striving is the key to every cave” (§55)New Era Community (Riga, 1936) — all paragraphs verified against the Riga line

Note: the numbering of the Riga edition of 1936 differs from the Urga edition of 1926. The kit's reference standard is the Riga one.

letters Helena Roerich's letters defend “Community” from political readings: the community of the Teaching is spiritual and cultural, without violence.

Facets “Facets” bring community down to the scale of a small circle: cooperation begins with two or three.

How to read. The key book for the “Fire of Ethics” project: almost all the day anchors about labour and cooperation come from here.

4Agni Yoga (Signs of Agni Yoga) · Paris, 1929

Role in the series. The method: a yoga of life without leaving life. Gives its name to the whole Teaching. Psychic energy, the forging of qualities in an ordinary day, testing by experience instead of taking things on trust.

The core of the book:

  • “First we shall apply the counsels of life” — experience before the name
  • Psychic energy — the all-originating force in a human being
  • Qualities are tested by the manifestations of life
  • Distinguishing indignation of spirit from irritation
  • Endless perfectment as the vector
“The quality of one's attainments is revealed in life” (§38) · “Each step of life must be considered as inseparable from self-improvement” (§36) · “It is necessary to distinguish between indignation of spirit and irritation… Gratitude is likewise the finest purifier of the organism” (§31) · “You have realized that joy is a special wisdom” (§185)Agni Yoga (Paris, 1929) — paragraphs verified; §31 contains both themes in one paragraph

Facets “Application is the shortest path of attainment. We know no other path” (Facets, 1962) — a direct continuation of this book's method.

letters “Striving and psychic energy are synonyms” (letter of 2.10.1936) — the key to the book's energetics.

How to read. The best entrance for the practitioner and the sceptic: a book of method. The Preface is a self-standing manifesto of “experience before the name”.

5Infinity, parts 1–2 · Paris, 1930 · one book in two parts

Role in the series. Cosmology: the frame expands to the limit. The infinity of space and spirit, the cosmic magnet, the seed of the spirit, evolution as a universal process. The human being is not a finale but a traveller without a ceiling.

The core of the book:

  • Infinity as a fact and as a call
  • The cosmic magnet and the attraction of the spirit
  • The seed of the spirit and its unfolding
  • The evolution of worlds and of humanity
  • Cooperation with the Cosmos
“Is it worthwhile to speak of Infinity if it is unattainable? But it does exist; and everything great, even if invisible, compels us to think about the ways to it”Infinity, part 1, §1 (introductory) — verified

Facets “Facets” ground the cosmology: infinity begins with tomorrow's step (“The heavenly is realised only through the earthly”, 1963).

letters The letters warn: read the cosmology without fantasising, keeping the link to the ethics of the day.

How to read. The “highest” book of the series — read after “Agni Yoga”, in small portions, paired with practice, so as not to drift into abstraction.

6Hierarchy · Paris, 1931

Role in the series. The law of connection: how Infinity becomes attainable. The Hierarchy of Light is not power but the law of help; the focus, the Teacher, the heart as the wire. A book about a vertical that does not cancel freedom.

The core of the book:

  • Hierarchy — a law, not coercion
  • The focus and the Teacher: connection instead of submission
  • The prayer of the heart — love and devotion
  • Equilibrium as the condition of ascent
  • Love — the guiding, creative Principle
“Hierarchy is not coercion, it is the law of the Universe” (Introduction, before §1) · “The prayer of the heart is the expression of love and devotion” (§60) · “…the balance. Like a spinning top, the rhythm of motion should be kept” (§54) · “love is a guiding and creative principle” (§280)Hierarchy (Paris, 1931) — verified; the Introduction stands before §1

letters The letter of 11.06.1935 (Individuality, the Chalice, the Antahkarana) — the anatomy of the connection this book speaks of.

Facets “Facets” are built on standing before the Teacher — the practical hierarchy of every record.

How to read. The anti-cult core of the series: this is where the safeguards of “Fire of Ethics” come from — connection without guru-lordship.

7Heart · Paris, 1932

Role in the series. The centre of the series — and the centre of the human being. The heart as the organ of synthesis and the bridge between the worlds: not an emotion but an instrument of cognition, prayer and connection. It is no accident that the middle of the corpus is given to the heart.

The core of the book:

  • The heart — a bridge between the worlds
  • The culture of the heart: education, not suppression
  • The heart as the measure in discernment
  • The silence and solemnity of the heart
  • The energy of the heart in healing and labour

Individual paragraphs of “Heart” do not yet have iron verification against the Riga edition in the kit — the book is given as a running theme. An adjacent verified anchor: “Here, as well, the heart is the only judge” — letter of Helena Roerich, 24.09.1935 (on discernment).

letters The letters call the path of the heart the shortest and the best protected from occult traps.

Facets “Take away love — and the light goes out, and all the qualities lose their luminosity” (Facets, 1953, §202) — the heart as the source of the qualities' luminosity.

How to read. A book for slow reading. Goes well paired with the practice of heartfulness (the Triad of the Heart in the “Practicum”).

8Fiery World, parts I–III · part I — Paris, 1933 · part II — Riga, 1934 · part III — Riga, 1935

Role in the series. The largest book of the series: the three worlds (Dense, Subtle, Fiery) and the fiery transmutation of the human being. Here the qualities of the spirit are directly called fires; death is rethought as a transition.

The core of the book:

  • The three worlds — layers of one reality
  • Qualities as fires: solemnity, courage, constancy
  • The watch over motives — the first discipline
  • Equilibrium — the law that contains all the others
  • The achievement of selflessness as the path
“Solemnity is like a key to the lock” (I, §10) · “Constancy is also a quality of Fire” (I, §53) · “Joy and courage are indispensable, but without Fire these qualities are not created” (I, §56) · “He who wishes to approach the Fire must watch all his motives” (I, §364) · “Only true devotion will prevent one from polluting the straight-knowledge” (II, §15) · “The law of Equilibrium contains all the other manifestations of life” (III, §230) · “One must fully realize the greatness of the hour” (III, §3)Fiery World I–III — all paragraphs verified against the Riga line

Facets “The affirmation of the qualities of the spirit is the process of consciously forming the fiery body” (Facets, 1962) — the summary formula of the whole trilogy.

diaries The diary records of the mid-1930s are the working environment from which the trilogy grew.

How to read. Read in parts and with the “Practicum” at hand: the trilogy is the main supplier of anchors for the 12 qualities.

9AUM · Riga, 1936

Role in the series. The energy of connection: prayer as vibration and psychic energy as a scientific fact. The book brings spirituality and research together — a call to study the subtle energies without superstition and without denial.

The core of the book:

  • Prayer — not begging, but connection and vibration
  • Psychic energy: observation and accumulation
  • Science and spirituality — allies, not enemies
  • Thought as a sending of energy
  • Gratitude and solemnity as the tuning of connection

A lesson in the kit's honesty: the popular reference “AUM, §454” (gratitude — “the great motive force”) was not confirmed by three independent checks and has been withdrawn; the anchor for gratitude has been moved to Agni Yoga §31 and “Guidance for the Leader” §9. “AUM” is given as a running theme until iron paragraphs appear.

letters The letters develop the line of a “science of psychic energy” — Helena Roerich corresponded with scientists and awaited laboratory study.

Facets “Facets” give a daily technique of prayer as standing-before in the spirit of “AUM”.

How to read. Useful for those who come from science: the book's language is observation and experience, not mysticism.

10Brotherhood · Riga, 1937

Role in the series. The goal of the series: a community of the highest order. The qualities of cooperation carried to the ideal of Brotherhood — trust, unity, mutual responsibility. The last book of the main series published in the authors' lifetime.

The core of the book:

  • Brotherhood as an attainable prototype, not a utopia
  • Trust — the foundation of the quality of shared labour
  • Unity in difference — the highest form of community
  • Mutual responsibility and watchfulness
  • The path from cooperation to Brotherhood

The paragraphs of “Brotherhood” in the kit are as yet without iron verification — the book is given as the running theme of the goal. The kit takes its practical anchors for cooperation from “Community” (§3, §5, §200 — verified).

Facets “Facets” — a living testimony of a disciple's brotherly connection with the Teacher, twenty years long.

letters The letters show Brotherhood as the working reality of the Stronghold, not a metaphor.

How to read. Read as a horizon: a book about where the ladder of community leads.

11Supermundane · records of 1938 · first published in full in the 1990s · numbering per agniyoga.org

Role in the series. A view from within: hundreds of paragraphs beginning “Urusvati knows…” about the Inner Life of the Brotherhood, thought-creation, psychic energy in everyday life and the supermundane world. A bridge between the main series and the diary source.

The core of the book:

  • The Inner Life of the Brotherhood — the daily life of the Stronghold
  • Thought-creation and cooperation with the Subtle World
  • Psychic energy in ordinary life
  • Patience and containment as qualities that are built
  • The continuity of life through the worlds
“…patience, containment, and tolerance are also created consciously”Supermundane, §704 — per agniyoga.org; the number needs final verification against a printed edition

diaries “Supermundane” is closest in genre to the diaries: the same conversations, arranged for the reader.

Facets The style of “Urusvati knows…” is directly continued by the style of “Facets”.

How to read. Not a Riga book: published after the passing of the series' authors. References — by the agniyoga.org numbering, with a note.

One stream in four forms: the source → the riverbed → the banks → the current after 1955.

1. The diaries — the source

“Records of the Teaching of Living Ethics”, 1920–1955 · 25 volumes · first record 24.03.1920, London

Helena Roerich's diary records of the conversations — the ore from which the books of the Teaching themselves were made. Their role in the map is genetic: everything canonised in the books grew from here. Direct quotations from the diaries are not required in practical materials: the canon has already absorbed their essence.

2. The books of the Teaching — the riverbed (the canon)

14 books · Paris/Riga, 1924–1937 (+“Supermundane”, records of 1938) · references: book + § of the Riga line

The very sequence of the books is a spiral from the Call to Brotherhood: the call of the Highest → foundations → the social dimension → the method of life → cosmology → the law of connection → the organ of the path → the three worlds → the energy of connection → the goal.

3. The letters of Helena Roerich — the banks (navigation)

1929–1955 · the Riga two-volume edition of 1940; the complete ICR edition in 9 vols. · references: date + addressee

“The university of the Teaching”: explanation of difficult passages, application to living destinies, warnings (against phenomena, mediumship, blind worship). It is the letters that give the keys: Individuality and personality, the Chalice and the Antahkarana (11.06.1935), striving = psychic energy (2.10.1936), “neither invite nor impose” (17.08.1934).

4. “Facets of Agni Yoga” — the current after 1955

Records of Boris Abramov, 1951–1972 · Novosibirsk: Algim, volumes by year · references: year + record no. · until 2042 — paraphrase

The line continued by a disciple whose records Helena Roerich confirmed as coming from the one Source. Their genre is the practice of the day: how exactly qualities are forged (“Application is the shortest path of attainment. We know no other path”, 1962), why only through the earthly (1963), qualities as elements of immortality (1961, §492).

Letters of Helena Roerich — corpus 2 · 1929–1955 · Riga: Uguns, 1940 (2 vols.) · complete edition: Moscow: ICR, vols. 1–9 · references: date + addressee

“The university of the Teaching”: explanation of difficult passages of the canon, application to living destinies, warnings. If the books are the riverbed, the letters are the navigation along it.

  • The structure of the human being: Individuality, personality, the Chalice, the Antahkarana
  • Keys to reading: the order of the books according to the reader's consciousness
  • Warnings: phenomena, mediumship, blind worship
  • Freedom: neither invite nor impose
  • The feminine principle and the balance of the Principles in the New Era
“We must neither invite nor impose — that is the basic rule” (to L. A. Johansson, 17.08.1934) · “Striving and psychic energy are, one may say, synonyms” (2.10.1936) · the structure of the human being and the Chalice (11.06.1935) · “Here, as well, the heart is the only judge” (24.09.1935) · “Joy is a special wisdom, and it can be attained only in achievement” (24.02.1939)dates verified; date + addressee unambiguously locate a letter in any edition

How to read. Read in parallel with the books: when a question arises — look for the answer in the letters by topic, not in the order of the volumes.

“Facets of Agni Yoga” — corpus 4 · records of Boris Abramov, 1951–1972 · Novosibirsk: Algim, volumes by year · references: year + record no. · until 2042 — paraphrase

The current after 1955: the line continued by a disciple whose records Helena Roerich recognised as coming from the one Source. The genre is the practice of the day: how exactly to apply what the canon affirms.

  • Application is the only path: ethics as fiery doing
  • The qualities of the spirit — the elements of the Chalice's immortality
  • The symphony of qualities: none grows alone
  • Equilibrium — a mighty shield
  • The heavenly is realised only through the earthly
“Application is the shortest path of attainment. We know no other path” (1962) · “The qualities of the spirit are those very elements of immortality…” (1961, §492) · “Containing a pair of opposites… a step in the expansion of consciousness” (1961, §546) · “The heavenly is realised only through the earthly” (1963) · “Take away love — and the light goes out…” (1953, §202)year + record no.; where the no. is not established — year + the verbatim phrase for searching the volume

Copyright until 2042: in public materials — paraphrase with a note. The formula from the 1954 volume (“only here, on Earth”) risks turning out on inspection to be the compiler's preface — it is not used in the kit.

How to read. Read a little at a time in the morning: the records are short and meant for a day of practice, not for binge reading.

Diaries of Helena Roerich — corpus 1 (the source) · “Records of the Teaching of Living Ethics”, 1920–1955 · 25 volumes · first record 24.03.1920, London

The ore from which the books themselves were made: 35 years of daily records of the conversations. Everything canonised in the books grew from here — so verification against the books covers the diary line.

  • The primary source of all the books of the series
  • 35 years of unbroken recording — itself a model of rhythm
  • Material broader than the canon: not everything went into the books
  • For the researcher — the context in which the texts were born
  • For the practitioner — the canon and the letters are enough

Direct quotations from the diaries are deliberately not used in the kit's practical materials: the canon has already absorbed their essence, and a complete verification of 25 volumes is a task for research institutes, not practitioners.

How to read. A corpus for deep research. It is enough for the practitioner to know: the source exists, is published, is accessible — and that is the foundation of trust in the canon.

Legal status and the method of verification

The books of the Teaching and the letters

Public domain since 01.01.2026 (Helena Roerich passed away in 1955; the term of life + 70 years has expired). Quoted verbatim. Specific editions, translations and scans may have their own terms — check before reproducing.

“Facets of Agni Yoga”

The records of Boris Abramov (1951–1972) are protected until 2042: in our materials they are conveyed in paraphrase with an explicit note; verbatim quotation — only with the rights holder's permission.

The paintings of Nicholas Roerich

Works in the public domain (the artist passed away in 1947). The reproductions on the site are from Wikimedia Commons; each one's source is stated.

The reference standard for paragraph numbering is the Riga–Paris line of first editions, 1924–1937 (agniyoga.org). In the ICR reprints (2003 and later) discrepancies of ±1–2 paragraphs are possible — a feature of those editions, not an error in the reference. Letters — by date and addressee; “Facets” — year + record number.
